Two teenage narrators provide a voice-over commentary examining the circumstances of a mass fainting that occurred among a group of girls in an American high school. By manipulating images gleaned from the web, particularly those depicting iconic cheerleaders, Lilith Grasmug exposes the violence of a heteronormative and (ultra)-conservative patriarchal culture.
Inspired by a mysterious case of collective fainting that occurred at a high school in North Carolina in 2002, Some of You Fucked Eva is set in American high schools – real incubators of a gendered and regimented world – where rituals such as the prom and cheerleading permeate the imagination of countless works of fiction. Lilith Grasmug deconstructs the mythology propagated by “high school movies” using a story narrated in voice-over by two teenagers to reveal its dark and unsettling side. These fictional testimonies, mixed with whispers, murmurs or ambient sounds, are embedded in a montage of images mostly gathered from the internet, which do not have an illustrative function. Shredded, altered, slowed down or cropped, their effect is to deepen the uncertainty of a story that wavers between collective memory and subjective perception. But by placing the silent images of the cheerleaders’ bodies at the centre of her investigation, the director highlights the violence of a patriarchal culture reactivated by the prevailing ultra-conservatism.
