In a remote town in Russia, ordinary people wait for a bus. An uninterrupted succession of long-focal length panoramic shots lingers on bodies and faces, capturing fragments of their miseries and troubles. Through the brilliant illusion of a single camera movement, the “landscape” painted by Loznitsa embraces the tragicomic polyphony of an oppressed people.

To the photographic stillness of his previous films, Sergei Loznitsa adds two colours: voice and movement. Landscape is composed of long‑lens panoramas capturing ordinary people waiting for the bus in a small suburban town in Russia. As the camera slowly pans over the bodies shivering in the cold and the weary faces, the filmmaker desynchronises the visible and the audible. We hear men and women in ushankas and headscarves talking about the “young guys dying in Chechnya”, illness, hospitals, alcohol and social problems, without ever being able to identify a particular speaker on screen. This composite, at times comical chorus of laments forms the counterpoint to the lethargy of the sleepers in The Train Stop. Neither here nor there, the figures in this landscape have forgotten the past, do not envision the future and are barely present – ruminating from the limbo of their own existence in a kind of internal monologue. That of the Russian collective unconscious, embodied by these anonymous figures stamping in the cold, before they are swept up into the great wheel of History, as suggested by the final whirl of buses departing the frame.
