Every year, the inhabitants of the rural region of Valdreu in Portugal flock to the church of Santo Antonio de Mixoes da Serra to have their cows, horses, cats, chickens and rabbits blessed. Loznitsa’s static shots sardonically capture the theatricality of a religious festival passed down through generations, celebrating a “miracle” that has become mechanical.
