At the school on Rue de Belleville in Paris, Marion’s class of 10 and 11 year-olds brings together children from all over the world. This year, she plans to travel the world exploring recipes. Each student must present a dish that reminds them of their family history, allowing them all to express what they feel as they discover new flavours. In this cosmopolitan setting, each shared recipe reveals intimate stories of exile, roots and cultural blending. While outside the window, tensions rise and the public school system falters, Jissel, Hamza, Mouloud, Rita, Maria, Milo and many others learn to get to know one another, to understand and to accept each other. Because, above all – as the teacher often reminds them – the school’s number one skill is teaching students how to live alongside one another. Belleville Kitchen offers a tender and humorous dive into a genuine lesson in humanity where, despite differences, community and diversity become a source of strength for living together in the world.
