The filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s latest work takes us on a spectacular world tour to meet the communities living amidst snowy landscapes. From the Northwest Territories of Canada, where the roads are carved along the rivers, to a village in Tyrol disrupted by scarcer and scarcer snowfall; At Jungfraujoch, the glacier mass is preserved through compaction, while in the Japanese Alps, massive snow walls attract tourists, and the Val d’Isère resort produces artificial snow in large quantities to help sustain its winter sports industry. Melt explores the gradual disappearance of the ice we used to think would last forever. The Austrian filmmaker’s majestic shots provide us with a unique space for reflection. Like the researcher whose time at the Neumayer Antarctic research station profoundly shaped his view of humanity’s presence on Earth, Geyrhalter here manages to evoke the humility needed in the face of Nature and climate change – forces that will soon impact life on Earth in ways that go far beyond our imagination.
