In the 2010s, Raoul Peck was granted unprecedented access to the work of James Baldwin: notes from an unfinished manuscript in which the Black American writer reflected on the lives and legacies of his friends Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and Malcolm X. Seeking a powerful dramatic structure—something with the force of a fictional screenplay—Peck delved into the archives and unearthed a handful of television appearances where Baldwin masterfully demonstrated his rhetorical brilliance. What remained was to find a Hollywood counterpoint to Baldwin’s theses and to weave in other writings by the author to enrich the narrative. The result is I Am Not Your Negro—a stunning filmic journey into the mind of one of the 20th century’s most incisive thinkers, who tackled the issue of race through the lens of class critique. Tracing the arc of Black American resistance from the 1950s to the present, Peck, through meticulously crafted editing, charts a path alongside his hero, offering a profound meditation on the myth of American exceptionalism—in which Baldwin and Peck were both actors and victims.
