What should you become, when you’re already grown up? Sara Stäuble attempts to answer this question in seven surrealist paintings using a snail, a ladder, an aquarium, a table with- out guests and a ceiling that is too high. She composes absurd and funny images in order to embody the feeling of becoming an adult, and to express the standstills and rough patches that accompany it. By decontextualizing the objects, or by freeing them from their first functions, Sara Stäuble joins a surrealist tradition, as reminiscent of the paintings of René Magritte as it is of the films of René Clair or Luis Buñuel. In counterrelief to this field survey, the film explores the difficulties of the creative process, its blocks and failures as frustrating as they are essential to its progress. But more than examining them, it finds in them the means to go further: for if the ceiling cannot be physically reached, the imagination can still break through it.
