Hiver 2014. Edouard Philippe, qua- rantenaire fidèle d’Alain Juppé, fait campagne pour conserver la mairie du Havre. Laurent Cibien, un de ses copains de lycée, le filme pendant ses « actions » publiques – mises en scène locales du vide empathique de la communication politique contemporaine – et dans les coulisses, lorsque Philippe constitue sa liste et parle stratégie. Mais Edouard, mon pote de droite, aux antipodes des habituelles hagiographies consacrées à ceux qui sont parvenus au sommet, est aussi une conversation entre deux amis aux convictions opposées sur le désir et l’essence du pouvoir. Premier volet d’un projet au long-cours qui, en suivant la carrière « in progress » d’un futur fonctionnaire de la politique, documente la fabrique des élites françaises, cette comédie révèle la petite cuisine composant l’ordinaire d’un métier, plus que la vision du monde censée l’animer. Avec un montage subtil et critique qui vient troubler par le hors-champ le jeu du héros, le cinéaste opère, mine de rien, la désacralisation salutaire d’un domaine encore trop souvent façonné par des représentations totémiques d’un autre âge.

Laurent Cibien, one of his school friends, films him during his public actions – local representations of the empathetic vacuum of contemporary political communication – and behind the scenes, when Philippe draws up his list and talks strategy. But The Politician, at odds with the habitual hagiographies consecrated to those who have made it to the top, is also a conversation on the desire for, and the essence of power between two friends with opposing beliefs. The first part of a long-term project, which, by following the ‘in progress’ career of a future political official, documents the making of the French élite. This comedy reveals the deal-making composing the ordinary aspects of a profession, rather than the vision of the world that is supposed to drive it. With subtle and critical editing that, off camera, disrupts the hero’s role, the filmmaker casually executes a salutary desecration of a domain that is still too often shaped by the totemic representations of another age.

Laurent Cibien, ein Freund aus Gymnasialzeiten, filmt ihn bei seinen öffentlichen ‚Aktionen‘ – lokal gefärbte Inszenierungen der empathischen Leere der modernen politischen Kommunikation – und in den Kulissen, als Philippe seine Liste aufstellt und über Strategie spricht. Aber im Gegensatz zu den Hagiographien über jene, die es an die Spitze geschafft haben, ist The Politician auch ein Gespräch zwischen zwei Freunden mit konträren Überzeugungen in Sachen Machtstreben und Wesen der Macht. Die Komödie – der erste Teil eines Langzeitprojekts über die Laufbahn eines zukünftigen Polit-Funktionärs und Dokumentation der französischen Elite-Fabrik – stellt vor allem die alltäglichen Vorgänge des Berufs in den Vor- dergrund, weniger die Vision der Welt, die das Handeln motivieren sollte. Mit einem subtilen, kritischen Schnitt, der mit dem nicht im Bild Gezeigten dem Auftritt des Helden einen Stoss versetzt, gelingt dem Filmemacher die Entheiligung eines Bereichs, der noch viel zu oft von veralteten totemistischen Darstellungen beherrscht wird.
