Ernest Cole: Lost and Found

This is the story of a South African photographer who became stateless in 1960s New York. Ernest Cole was Black and admired Cartier-Bresson. He fled apartheid, capturing its horrors through his photography. His book House of Bondage, published in 1967 and banned in his homeland, brought him fame. But he was soon sent to document the suffering of Black Americans in the rural Deep South, where he recognized the same patterns of racial segregation that he had experienced in South Africa. Afterward, he became homeless. He was almost forgotten until his death in 1990, and the discovery in 2017 of 60,000 negatives stored in a Swedish bank. Raoul Peck reconstructs this remarkable journey, weaving together Cole’s images and words. The filmmaker spoke with those who had known him, from near and far, to tell his version of the story. Ernest Cole: Lost and Found is a first-person account of the turmoil and anger of a brilliant artist shaped by exile. This masterful film allows the photographer to reclaim his destiny, while also honoring an entire generation engaged in the anti-apartheid struggle.
