On February 24th, 2022, Russia invades Ukraine. The news reaches the director, Rostislav Kirpicenko, in Paris, where he has been living for many years. The war raises questions about exile... In search of answers, Rostislav travels to Lithuania, where his grandfather settled, before returning to Dnipro, the Ukrainian town where he grew up.
1 Rue Angarskaia is a return to one’s roots, a reconnection with a familiar and beloved country: Ukraine, now fighting for its survival. When the war broke out in February 2022, filmmaker Rostislav Kirpicenko was living in Paris. In the French capital, he had found new ties — almost enough to feel at home. But the Russian invasion shattered that fragile sense of balance, stirring a deep nostalgia for the country of his origins. As the months went by, an inner turmoil took hold. What was becoming of this nation where war had taken root so deeply? What would remain of it, in the end?
Driven by a sense of urgency, Rostislav took to the road to capture something of his Ukraine, before it became changed beyond recognition by the conflict. From Lithuania, where part of his family now lives, to Dnipro, the city of his childhood, he films his loved ones, strangers, and the landscapes that shaped him.
With empathy, his camera lingers on faces, capturing the quiet joy of reunion or the wonder of a first encounter. Scene after scene, a distance sets in between the filmmaker and his homeland.
