Filmed in 2023, Nothing Happens After That is a fictional work in which Ibrahim Omar follows the harrowing day in the life of a Sudanese family grappling with the grief of losing their child and the despair of being unable to give him a proper burial. The brightly coloured images from this short film reappear in his new work, Nothing Happens After the Revolution, where they are recast in sombre black and white to convey the context of its creation. As the shoot runs into production problems, the filmmaker feels torn by his inability to return to his homeland, Sudan, where a revolution has erupted. Plagued by doubts about his work, he begins teaching his native language to his very young daughter. Soon after, his cinematographer leaves Egypt for Sweden and then informs him that he will no longer work with him. The tone of the filmmaker’s voice-over shifts to deliver a broader reflection on exile, distance, grief and the passing on of knowledge.
