In New York, the brilliant philosopher Béatrice Courte hides herself away in big libraries, absorbed in her research on the brain. One day, in the course of her studies she discovers the chronovisor, a machine built in the 1950s that supposedly enabled Father Pellegrino Ernetti to travel through time and photograph the past. He is said to have witnessed Christ on the cross. What follows is a mysterious and captivating quest in the vein of Borges and Eco, where the pieces of the puzzle – mostly made up of publications and audio archives – come together to reveal the true story of the chronovisor, an invention that caused disquiet even among papal circles. Filmmaking duo Auen and Walker stage their fascinating research in this film, which employs all the conventions of a 1970s noir. From the use of 16 mm to the unsettling music and even the authentic vintage titles, they employ various visual techniques to immerse us in a delirious fiction that takes us back in time to this strange invention.
