SUN SURFACE combines documentary material with a staged science fiction narrative set in Ordos, a ghost city in the Inner Mongolia region of China:In the near future strange transferences of energy and matter occur between the surface of the sun and that of the earth. Like a broken digital screen, the earth has started to glitch. We follow a small team of scientists that is sent to map out an unpopulated desert and city area in order to understand the phenomenon. The film arranges discourses of critical theory, fiction and speculation, digital image production and documentary material around the image of the sun. The film is structured through different narrative threads, focussing on various geographies as well as aesthetic and cinematic strategies related to the concept of accelerationism.Taking this as a starting point, the film interrogates questions of growth, energy, economics and fictions of techno-scientific progress in the times of the climate crisis and late capitalism.
