Showing Up

When is the right time to create a work of art with your own hands? Is it at the first light of morning, just before you’re overtaken by the duties of the day? Or is it at the end of a day filled with irritations, channeling your accumulated frustrations by moulding a lump of clay into the figure of a playful dancer? Showing Up explores these concrete, everyday questions that artists must ask themselves by depicting the singular life of a sculptress, masterfully portrayed by Michelle Williams. The film takes place over a few days during which Lizzy puts the finishing touches to pieces for a new exhibition. She works in an apartment she rents from a fellow artist, Jo, whose work is acclaimed by the local artistic community. Tensions rise between the two women when Jo is slow to reinstall the hot water at Lizzy's. Art and the ordinary coexist at every moment, intertwining and complementing each other in every scene. Reichardt tenderly and intricately documents the emotional bonds between those who create: the jealousy, the acts of support and love.
