On 3 March 2019, Julie Douib was murdered by her ex-husband and father of her children in Corsica. It was a predictable femicide – the man was already known to be dangerous. Why was the murderer not stopped? Filmmaker Giulia Montineri questions those close to the events to understand what happened, what was and was not known, exploring how inaction occurred and why the police failed to act. Little by little, she helps us step back and gain perspective. The focus is on the system, the preconceived notions about male-female relationships circulating on café terraces – what slips through in language – the everyday misogyny, perceptions of domestic violence, and how silence and cowardice become accomplices to the murder of women. Beyond this specific case, #SainteJulie exposes a “total social fact”, revealing how society and its institutions operate and spotlighting the mechanisms of everyday misogyny at work – often unconscious, yet still deadly. A thorough investigation, conducted with both intelligence and great sensitivity, that steers well clear of sensationalism.
