Javier Chocobar, leader of the Chuschagasta indigenous community, was murdered in 2009 by two men who tried to evict him from his land at riflepoint. Using a camera hidden in his clothing, the murderer filmed the entire attack right up to Chocobar’s death. These images guard against the denial of the crime, but do not necessarily guarantee justice. Between the events and the 2018 conviction, the filmmaker behind La Ciénaga attended the trial, filming 300 hours of footage during the proceedings and revealing the Argentinians’ inability to combat the seizure of indigenous lands.  In her first documentary, she juxtaposes the statements delivered at the trial with commentary from historians and lawyers specialising in dispossessions from colonisation. In this way, she constructs the counter-narrative absent from the trial and produces an archaeology of the events that led to the murder of the Chuschagasta chief. Beyond the trial, a drone hovers over the land of his ancestors, offering a superhuman perspective that still cannot supplant the moral laid out by a historian quoting from Guy Hamilton’s The Devil’s Disciple: “History, sir, will lie. As always”.
