In 1970s Massachusetts, a red brick museum is the beating heart of a small town. James Blaine Mooney, the unemployed son of a judge, steals a few items in an effort to stave off his boredom. Having spotted several valuable paintings, he maps out his first heist, but he surrounds himself with a bunch of inept crooks and nothing goes as planned. Brought slowly down to earth, James is forced to leave the city and his family. Steeped in nonchalance, he embarks on a mediocre escape, reminding us that, to some, even running away can seem peaceful. Presented at Cannes in 2025, The Mastermind is the latest film from Kelly Reichardt. By imbuing the heist film with a melancholic-political tint, Reichardt upends the genre’s codes to draw the intimate from the spectacular.
