Boutheyna Bouslama se souvient de vacances en Syrie à l’été 1994 : un garçon lui tendait ses bras chargés de cerises. Il s’appelait Oussama. Vingt ans après, son nom apparaît au générique de Homs, chronique d’une révolte de Talal Derki, programmé à Istanbul. L’ami d’enfance est devenu « l’homme à la caméra », un « activiste média » documentant les manifestations et leur répression par le régime Assad, jusqu’à son arrestation en 2012. La cinéaste part à la recherche de celui dont le nom figure sur la liste des 70 000 disparitions forcées survenues depuis le début du conflit. Pendant trois ans, elle multiplie les rencontres avec celles et ceux qui l’ont connu : Kahtan, collègue qui conserve sa caméra comme un talisman, Loze, Noura, ou encore Yassin, écrivain passé lui-même par les geôles d’Assad-père et dont l’épouse est portée disparue. L’espoir, le découragement, l’obstination innervent ce film qui tient autant du journal intime que de l’enquête sur un système oppresseur. À la recherche de l’homme à la caméra veut rendre justice à un citoyen-photographe « avalé par le sol » parce qu’il témoignait d’une réalité que personne n’a voulu voir.

Twenty years later, his name appears in the credits of Return to Homs by Talal Derki, programmed in Istanbul. The childhood friend has become “the man with the camera”, a “media activist” documenting the demonstrations and their repression by the Assad regime, until his arrest in 2012. The filmmaker sets off in search of the man whose name features on the list of the 70,000 forced disappearances that have occurred since the beginning of the conflict. For three years, she multiplies her encounters with the women and men who have known him: Kahtan, a colleague who keeps his camera like a talisman, Loze, Noura, or Yassin, a writer who also passed though the jails of Assad’s father and whose wife is reported as missing. Hope, despondency and obstinacy innervate this film which is as much a diary as it is an investigation of an oppressive system. Looking for the Man With the Camera wants to ensure justice for a citizen-photographer “swallowedby the soil” because he bore witness to a reality that nobody wanted to see.

Drei Jahre lang traf sie zahlreiche Menschen, die ihn kannten: Kahtan, ein Kollege, der seine Kamera wie einen Talisman aufbewahrt, Loze, Noura oder Yassin, einen Schriftsteller, der selbst die Kerker von Assads Vater kennengelernt hat, und dessen Frau vermisst wird. Hoffnung, Entmutigung, Hartnäckigkeit durchdringen diesen Film, der sowohl ein Tagebuch als auch die Untersuchung eines repressiven Systems ist. Looking for the Man With the Camera will Gerechtigkeit gegenüber einem Bürger-Fotografen üben, der «vom Boden verschluckt» wurde, weil er eine Realität zeigte, die niemand sehen wollte.
