INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM COMPETITION
Island of the Hungry Ghosts, Gabrielle Brady – International premiere
Poh Lin lives in the middle of the Indian Ocean, on Christmas Island, which was originally inhabited only by millions of migratory crabs. She works there as a trauma counsellor with refugees held in a high-security facility, behind closed doors. A hybrid and powerful film in which the wild beauty of the landscapes is confronted with the horror of day-to-day life in the detention centre.
• Thursday 19.04 21:15, Capitole Leone | followed by a debate with the filmmaker >
• Friday 20.04 12:30, Grande Salle (Salle Communale) >
Atelier | Philip Scheffner
A unique voice in contemporary German documentary filmmaking, Philip Scheffner will give a Masterclass together with the German director and author Merle Kröger, with whom he founded the production platform pong in Berlin.
Among the retrospective's films, Havarie (2016) is presented as a Swiss premiere in the presence of the filmmaker. From a cruise ship, we see 13 people trying to cross the Mediterranean. A YouTube video of this encounter, transformed here into an almost-fixed image, accompanies a story of migration, the communication between the captain and the rescue team, the testimony of the man who filmed these images... Perspectives that question these images, which are destined to recur, over and over again.
• Masterclass Philip Scheffner & Merle Kröger Thursday 19.04 10:00, Usine à Gaz >
In English, with simultaneous translation into French. In collaboration with ARTE.

On the Hillsides, Abdallah Badis – World premiere
Eight young urban people from Oran and its surroundings are in search of a "hidden" country that they do not know well or that they are fantasising about: their own. During the summer, they set out with Abdallah Badis in a documentary adventure taking the form of an initiatory novel, towards the rural hinterland, the invisible and beating heart of an Algeria past and present.
