South African cinema is at the heart of the Focus section of the 48th edition of Visions du Réel. In partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Focus South Africa will shed light on the high quality of this country’s production, which offers diverse and passionate filmmaking.
19 contemporary documentaries are screened during the Festival (21–29 April 2017).
5 film projects still in development are presented by the South African directors and producers with an opportunity for one-to-one meetings with international TV commissioning editors, producers, distributors and funds during the Focus Talk (25 April 2017). At the end of this special day offering discussions, case studies and gatherings with the South African guests – directors, producers, film institutions – to explore the South African cinematographic landscape of the past ten years, as well as the current (co-)production and funding situation, the most promising project will be awarded the Prix visions sud est, with a prize of CHF 10,000.
The jury has decided to award a project that surprised them by the strength of its images. While it is deeply anchored in the South African reality, it opens up another perspective on the issues that small businesses have to face in the 21st century.
