Meeting Gorbachev

Meeting Gorbachev

  • André Singer, Werner Herzog

Synopsis

Over a six-month period, Werner Herzog meets several times with 87-year-old Mikhail Gorbachev, the former President of the Soviet Union. They talk about politics, inevitably, about the six years during which the Russian headed the USSR, about perestroika and glasnost, and also about reunification—since this is an aspect more closely connected to the filmmaker's biography who grew up in post-war Germany. Interweaving conversations with archive images—whose very choice is inescapably emblematic—André Singer and Werner Herzog paint a portrait of one of the men who marked the 20th century, and with him, probably a certain Russian soul. Ever in the frame, Herzog addresses as much the deep admiration that he has for the statesman as his intention to reach a more human and less factual and historic dimension. He produces a singularly personal film and shows all the poetry of two illustrious men.
