Koka, The Butcher

  • Bence Máté

For the first time the legendary pigeon races of Cairo are captured on camera. Koka is a respected figure in Cairo’s pigeon fighting world. He spends most of his time preparing his birds for races, in which whole neighbourhoods compete to hunt down and capture each other’s pigeons. But living for his passion clashes with the norms of Koka’s conservative neighbourhood, known as ‘Garbage City’, due to the community of informal garbage collectors that live there. When his father decides to marry him off, Koka realises that an upcoming race could be his last. On competition day, he leads Garbage City against one of the strongest pigeon fighting neighbourhoods in Cairo. The unthinkable happens for Koka: his team loses. Tension mounts when he refuses to acknowledge the humiliating defeat, but Koka’s old brother steps in and convinces him to defuse the situation and concede. When the wedding day arrives, Koka acknowledges there may be more to life than pigeon fighting after all.
