Docs in Progress Terms & Conditions – Edition 2017

Docs in Progress

Docs in Progress, as part of the Doc Outlook – International Market (DOCM), presents six projects/films in their finishing stages. After a pitch preparation, the visual material is screened for film professionals exclusively (festival representatives, distributors, TV buyers...) attending Visions du Réel and the DOCM. A networking coffee and individual meetings follow the presentation.

Selection criteria

We are looking for fresh and unique documentary projects of high quality that combine an artistic ambition with passion for the subject and commitment to the protagonists. We are interested in presenting projects within the great diversity of the cinema du réel, from experienced as well as new directors from all over the world.

The project should be a creative feature-length documentary with theatrical potential on international markets and should address an international audience.

Docs in Progress will take place during the Festival Visions du Réel and the DOCM on Tuesday 25 April 2017.

On Tuesday afternoon each film crew will introduce the project/film with a short pitch: Starting with a two sentence synopsis, you will announce which scenes are going to be shown. Ideally, these short scenes should be representative for the whole. You then will explain which stage the film project has reached right now, what still needs to be done and what the team is actually looking for. Afterwards you will show some further visual materials. Each team has up to twelve minutes to present their project including introduction and visual material.

After the presentation of all films/projects the film teams and film professionals will be invited to get together around a cup of coffee. Additionally, one-to-one meetings with interested professionals (festivals, distributors, TV buyers) may be arranged on site.

The selected projects will be published in a booklet. The catalogue will be sent by e-mail to interested film professionals before the Festival. During the Festival, it will be available in printed form.

A list of the professionals attending the Festival as well as the individual timetable for each participant will be available two weeks before the Festival.

How to apply?

Please submit your project online in English. Longer texts as treatment etc. may be sent in French, German, Italian, Spanish if you like. Please send us a protected link to view the visual material online (preferably) or send us a DVD. Please provide the whole rough cut. We are also interested in your marketing and distribution strategy that might be of valuable help in preparing brief written explanations of the networking and individual meetings.

The information will be partly used for the project catalogue. The selected projects will have the opportunity to update the information on time.

There is no registration or participation fee. Travel, hotel and food have to be covered by the teams. We are happy to assist you with the logistics.

The selected projects will get two free DOCM accreditations and additional accreditations at a reduced fee (allowing the access to all the film screenings at the festival and the Media Library online as well as to most DOCM networking and training activities ; some are only on personal invitation)

Application Deadline

The registration form online must be completed and the visual material uploaded until the 15 December 2016.

The selected projects will be notified in February 2017.

Visions du Réel / DOCM requires the VdR logo (sent on request) to be taken up in the credits of the film once finalized. The following sentence should be mentioned in the credit list : « (film title) has been presented at Docs in Progress 2017 at Visions du Réel, Festival international de cinéma Nyon ».
