The Beholder of the Eye starts at an artistic residency in Toronto Island themed Luminous Bodies. Volunteer male models were recruited for a series of male nudes, as a questioning response to the smaller presence of female artists, and the abundance of female nudes. This multi-media project, comprised of a video and a photography element, unveils the highly contrived process of image making from casting call to a pre-production meeting where the all female crew explores contingency scenarios, from unlikely interactions during the shoot to the critiques these women provide as they look at male bodies with strictly aesthetic preoccupations. This process film lifts the curtain on the deliberations made as we set out to address gender bias, ageism, directorial power dynamics and inscribe them into striking images, as these models unapologetically display bodily flaws for the camera in a way that stuns the relentlessly self-examing female crew.
