SCRAP provides an insight into the work of Sabine Hertig. During two years, we have witnessed the creation of a monumental collage triptychon in black and white. Photographs found in high brow magazines were ruthlessly cut up and pictures once hidden behind book covers now collide and finally become part of a grandious composition. We observe the artist as she struggles her way through her pervasive collages. «What I do is nothing else but painting – with scissors and glue.» We experience how scraps grow into structure on canvas and we wonder: How much order and how much chaos can an image bear in itself? Hertig visualizes today's vast, yet ephemeral collective visual memory – while trying to renew the very concept of painting. The distant viewer makes out the visual structure of a painting, which gradually dissolves into subtle mosaic of scraps when he views them up close: Its a playful intercourse of the boundaries between visibility and the realm of things invisible.
