Shot over a period of 2 years, filmmaker Adrienne Gruben (“Treasure Island,” “You’re Going To Miss Me”) combines interviews, archival footage, and newly commissioned illustrations to bring Lily Renée’s story to life. Born into an affluent Jewish family in Vienna in 1921, Lily started drawing from an early age. In 1938, during the Nazi occupation of Austria, she boarded a Kindertransport for England, leaving her parents behind. She worked for two years as a nanny, servant and candy striper, before reuniting with her parents in New York. Taking up art again, she would eventually land a job at Fiction House, becoming one of the first female comic book artists during the industry’s Golden Age. She would draw for “Jane Martin,” “The Werewolf Hunter,” and the title she is most known for, “Señorita Rio.”
