'Oyfn veg shteyt a boym' is a personal documentary that starts at a musical encounter in Amsterdam between a Jewish man and a young female filmmaker. Jewish music and the man’s poetry about his persecuted family, are the main theme in the story. His request to the filmmaker to turn his poetry into songs is the start of a special bond between the two of them.
Behind his poems, it turns out an entire world lies, full of unexpected twists in his life and childhood. During the search for the man’s identity and past, an intimate friendship grows between them and, little by little, the turbulent past of the man gets uncovered.
Still, the film does not focus very long on the intensity of te man’s stories. Much more, it shows the friendship between these two people and everything they share. Together they build a world in which they sing, cycle and play with marbles. It’s a world where the man gets room to move beyond his own cruel factual history, to walk around and play.
